Quarter Crann Print

£25.00

The Quarter Crann is a risograph artwork which depicts herring fish by Louisa Katherine Thomson; an illustrator and printmaker who's endlessly inspired by Scotland's shorelines, people and landscapes.

Louisa's creative journey began while at the Edinburgh College of Art, where she explored her family's fisherfolk history and the stories of Scotland's 'Herring Lasses' women young and old who prepared, pickled and packed the fish for exportation.

During the 1800s, quarter crann's were baskets used to weigh and carry herring, becoming a standardised measurement to ensure fisherfolk were paid fairly for their catch. The word 'crann' itself originated in Scotland as the Gaelic term 'measure for fresh herring'.

This particular print began as a hand-drawn illustration in her Edinburgh studio, before being transformed into a risograph artwork which is similar to screen-printing, but uses stencils to create a digital print that honours the original artwork. Every print is hand-signed and titled by the artist.
