Why Shopping Small Makes a Big Impact
Being a small business owner is a delicate dance of late nights, endless cups of tea, and plenty of juggling. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s incredibly rewarding. The true joy comes from being able to share the work of so many talented people, many of whom are based right here in Scotland. Their creativity, passion, and commitment to their craft are what make our shop at Òr so special.
We’re fortunate to work with over 200 artists and makers, each with their own distinct style and approach. Whether it’s a piece of hand-thrown pottery, a beautifully made piece of jewellery, or a one-of-a-kind painting, each item tells a story. And every time we send an order out into the world - no matter how big or small - we feel like we’re sending a little piece of Skye with it. Our online shop allows us to connect with customers from near and far, creating a shared sense of connection between the artists and the buyers, whether you’re here on the island or simply dreaming of being here.
Shopping small with us doesn’t just support our shop; it has a much wider impact. Every purchase helps sustain an entire community of independent makers who pour their hearts into their work. These are people who care deeply about what they create and because so much of what we sell is handmade, many of our pieces are unique and full of character. So, whether you’re choosing something special for a friend, or treating yourself (we promise, we won’t judge!), you can feel good knowing you’re buying something truly one-of-a-kind.
This Christmas, we invite you to shop with purpose. When you choose to support small businesses, you’re helping to keep creativity alive. You're investing in quality craftsmanship, in artistry that tells a story, and in people who are passionate about what they do. Each purchase you make creates a ripple effect - supporting the people who make our world a little more beautiful.
So, the real question is - why wouldn’t you shop small?
